12 athletes to compete in U16 FIBA Americas in Argentina this summer

(TORONTO, ON) – Canada Basketball is pleased to announce the final U16 Men’s National Team that will represent Team Canada at the U16 FIBA Americas in Bahia Blanca, Argentina from June 10-14.

“Our athletes have shown outstanding work ethic and commitment to the team to solidify their spots on our final roster,” said Head Coach, Dave DeAveiro. “We’re pleased with the progress the team has made over the course of our training camps this year and we’re looking forward to competing.”

DeAveiro, a native of Toronto, returns for his fourth year coaching the U16/U17 age-group team. He is joined by assistants Michael Meeks (Canada Basketball) and James Derouin (University of Ottawa), as well as apprentice coach Nicky Davis (Sheridan College).

“It will be the first time these athletes will have the opportunity to represent Canada in international competition,” said Rowan Barrett, Executive Vice President/Assistant General Manager, Men’s High Performance. “This is an important opportunity for growth and development as athletes and young men.”

The team will complete its final training camp at Humber College – North Campus on Thursday, before heading to Argentina. The squad will face-off against Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina in the preliminary round of the U16 FIBA Americas.

Athletes were identified throughout the year in a series of identification camps and recommendations from the Provincial/Territorial Service Organizations. In 2014, the U16 squad finished 6th at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Cup in Dubai. Canada is currently ranked 3rd worldwide in the FIBA Men’s age-group rankings.
