It is no secret that times are tough right now and that may deter some people from progressing on and off the court. That is not the case for T’yana Todd.
The incredibly talented Todd from Royal Crown Academy narrowed her list of universities down to 5 last week: UConn, Syracuse, Georgia, Mississippi State, Louisville. An impressive list for an impressive young athlete.
Speaking to Todd (6’0″ G, 2022), it is clear that her drive to play at the next level did not change despite the obstacles being thrown her way during the pandemic.
Even though she had no access to the gym, Todd did many home workouts to stay in shape and improve her quickness and overall athleticism.
Todd also placed a big emphasis on the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. She saw the light at the end of the tunnel and used it as motivation to push through.
“At some point this will all end. I just need to stay focused on my long-term goal and keep working hard”, said Todd.
According to Todd’s coach, Handel Kipp, T’yana’s hunger to get better is what separates her from other great players. She takes tremendous pride in her craft and wants to be the best on and off the court.
“She just wants to be the best. She’s constantly in the gym when she can, getting shots up. She works out at game speed and does whatever she can to correct her weaknesses and get better.”, Coach Kipp added.
On the court, Todd’’s game speaks for itself. She is a very well-rounded player who is versatile enough to play multiple positions and play them effectively. She leads by example and always seems to find a way to make an impact on the floor.
Off the court, Todd places a big focus on her nutrition and likes to stay engaged with the team. Her leadership off the court speaks to her character as someone who is determined to succeed.
When asked who Todd’s player comparison was, Coach Kipp gave an intriguing response.
“If I could compare her game to anyone, Candace Parker comes to mind. Not necessarily size-wise, but T’yana can do everything on the court, kind of like Candace Parker. She is skilled everywhere and has potential to do anything you need her too. She is a very high IQ player and can score and make plays with the best of them”. Some very high praise from Coach Kipp.
Todd is not entirely sure when she will make a decision on what university she will attend. There are many things that need to be considered before committing anywhere.
“Relationships with the coaching staff are really important for me. I want to make sure that I am in a place where I can thrive and achieve my goals. Team fit needs to be right” Todd explained. “Not being able to visit these schools or meet the coaches in person is really delaying things, but I’m hoping to make my visits in July and make my decision hopefully by the end of the summer.”
Regardless of where she decides to attend, Todd is going to make waves at the next level. Whichever school is lucky enough to land T’yana Todd is getting a real winner.
We are excited to see your growth and development, T’yana!
